Mrs. R.'s Story
How a Senior’s Friendly Home Visitor
Became a Friend for Life
Did you know that Catholic Charities Hawai‘i Paraprofessional Services offer travel companion services and friendly home visits to seniors ages 60 and older on O‘ahu? Our compassionate volunteers accompany seniors to appointments and activities, ensuring they get to their destinations safely. They also frequently visit seniors in the comfort of their homes, lending an ear and a hand to kūpuna who have no family members or lack a support system. All paraprofessional volunteers are screened, trained and provided support to carry out their good work.
One senior whose life has changed for the better because of this program is Mrs. R., who lives alone in a Honolulu apartment on a fixed income. Her grown children help her when they are able, but they are not always available to provide her the support she needs. Sadly, the 81-year-old is frail and unable to drive herself to appointments or visit her family. Feeling isolated, Mrs. R. contacted CCH’s Senior Services intake line to find help. Maureen Caracciolo, Program Volunteer Coordinator of CCH’s Paraprofessional Services, matched Mrs. R. with a compatible volunteer.
The volunteer escorts Mrs. R. to the grocery store, pool and beach, and the two enjoy sightseeing and having lunch together every week. She has thoroughly enjoyed the experience and has indeed become a very special person in her client’s life.
"I'm so grateful," Mrs. R. shared. "She's not just a volunteer— she's my friend."
