With October recognized as domestic violence awareness month, nearly 1,000 people came out to show their support at the 21st annual Men’s March Against Violence earlier this month in downtown Honolulu.
With this year’s theme being “Walk The Talk,” Catholic Charities Hawai‘i and several other organizations sponsored the October 8 event to take a stand against domestic violence. The short march took place from the State Capitol to Skygate Park near Honolulu Hale, followed by a rally featuring several motivational speakers.
“It’s such a behind-the-scene kind of issue,” Catholic Charities Hawai‘i CEO and president Jerry Rauckhorst described the topic of domestic violence. “People don’t like to talk about it, but we men really have to take a stand, come forward and say we’ve got to eliminate domestic violence in our community.”
The local domestic violence action center reported receiving more than 11,000 calls in the fiscal year 2015.
