Sometimes all it takes is one conversation to change the course of someone’s life.
When Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi’s Intensive Outreach Program (IOP) team met Sheldon at Ala Moana Beach Park, he had been experiencing homelessness for just four days.
It had happened quickly.
After moving from Maui in search of opportunity, Sheldon found work and a place to live on Oʻahu. But like many Hawaiʻi residents facing the high cost of living, one setback was enough to send everything unraveling. When his employment and housing situation fell through, Sheldon suddenly found himself without a home and unsure of what steps to take next.
“I was just sitting there thinking, What am I going to do?” Sheldon recalled. “I had given up.”
For Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi Housing Assistance and Referral Programs (HARP) Program Administrator Jennifer Tehotu, moments like this are why outreach is so important.
“When we first met Sheldon, he was a little worried about accepting shelter services,” Jennifer said. “We offered the support, but ultimately it was up to him to decide whether to say yes or no.”
Fortunately, Sheldon chose to accept help.
The outreach team connected with him at Ala Moana Beach Park and began the process of helping him regain stability. The following day, Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi arranged transportation to shelter, where staff were waiting to welcome him.
“Sheldon arrived with just a regular bag,” Jennifer said. “He didn’t have clothing or many personal items. We were able to help secure clothes and the basic things he needed to get started.”
For someone experiencing homelessness, those first moments of stability can be life-changing. Having a safe place to sleep, regular meals, and caring support provides the foundation needed to begin rebuilding.
A Path Forward Begins
Every person’s journey out of homelessness looks different. Some need assistance finding permanent housing. Others need help replacing identification documents, accessing healthcare, finding employment, or reconnecting with community resources.
For Sheldon, the focus was getting him connected with the tools and support he needed to move forward.
Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi helped Sheldon enroll in Medicaid, allowing him to receive healthcare coverage and continue working with case management staff. The team also began looking at transportation options and other resources that would help him as he returned to employment.
Then came an exciting milestone.
“I’m going to start working,” Sheldon said with a smile.
Sheldon accepted a position where he will help maintain classrooms through custodial work.
“I’m cleaning classrooms,” he shared.
The opportunity represents more than just a paycheck. It is a step toward independence, confidence, and rebuilding his future.
“He’s moving in the right direction with reintegrating into the community,” Jennifer said. “Gaining employment is an important step. Right now, we’re focused on helping him continue to build stability.”
With employment beginning, the next goal is helping Sheldon transition toward more permanent housing.
“Hopefully, with stable employment, he can transition to an apartment or other housing opportunity,” Jennifer explained. “The housing market is challenging right now, and we continue to work with him on what comes next.”
Homelessness Can Happen Faster Than Most People Realize
Sheldon’s story is a reminder that homelessness can happen quickly and can impact people from all walks of life.
In Hawaiʻi, where the cost of living remains among the highest in the nation, many individuals and families are just one unexpected setback away from a housing crisis. A lost job, financial hardship, or personal challenge can quickly change someone’s circumstances.
The need for support continues across Oʻahu. The 2026 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count identified 4,539 individuals experiencing homelessness on Oʻahu, representing thousands of people in our community facing uncertainty and searching for a path toward stability.
For people like Sheldon, early intervention can make all the difference.
Through the Intensive Outreach Program, Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi meets people where they are, builds trust, and connects them to the services needed to move forward. Outreach teams help individuals access shelter, healthcare, employment support, case management, and other resources that can prevent a temporary crisis from becoming long-term homelessness.
A Helping Hand at the Right Moment
Since entering shelter, Sheldon has already seen positive changes.
“I got a little more healthy since I’ve been here,” he said. “They get three meals a day over here.”
Behind those simple words is a deeper transformation: safety, consistency, and hope.
With support from Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi staff and community partners, Sheldon is beginning a new chapter. He has a place to stay, healthcare coverage, employment ahead, and a team walking alongside him as he works toward permanent stability.
His journey is still in its early stages, but Sheldon’s story shows what can happen when someone is offered compassion at the moment they need it most.
Because sometimes, hope begins just four days after everything falls apart.
