A BIG mahalo to everyone who helped make this day such a memorable one for our keiki! Thanks to the incredible team at the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC), 69 children in our Koastal Kids program and 10 volunteers shared an unforgettable day filled with joy, learning, and cultural connection.
From the moment they boarded the bus, anticipation sparkled in their eyes. But the real magic came alive when they experienced the vibrant cultural presentations—the powerful HĀ: Breath of Life show, the mesmerizing fire dance, and the traditional music and games that had our keiki shouting enthusiastic “cheehoos” throughout the day.
What touched us most was seeing how the children connected with the people and traditions they encountered. This wasn’t just entertainment—it was a transformative cultural education experience. Keiki who often struggle with self-confidence and belonging were actively laughing, singing, and engaging with peers. The structured activities created a safe space for them to express themselves while building resilience, social skills, and pride in who they are.
For many of our Koastal Kids—children who face the challenges of homelessness, housing instability, and emotional struggles—this day meant so much more than a fun outing. It was a chance to feel rooted in culture, to see themselves reflected in community, and to build a stronger sense of identity and belonging.
Without dedicated funding, these excursions rarely happen. Typically, these cultural trips cannot take place due to the cost, making this day even more meaningful. Thanks to support from the Department of Education Homeless Programs, this experience was possible, giving our keiki an opportunity they might not otherwise have.
From a healing perspective, cultural connection can be powerful medicine. The joy, pride, and confidence we witnessed are building blocks for emotional stability and self-worth—essential tools for helping our keiki overcome the trauma and instability in their young lives.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this experience possible. Together, we are giving our most vulnerable children not just a day of joy, but a pathway toward healing, hope, and a stronger future.
Mahalo nui loa for supporting Catholic Charities Hawai‘i’s Koastal Kids program.
