Lei, Stories, and Connection at Maililand

Last week, our Kupuna to Kamali‘i program brought together keiki, teens, and families in Maililand for a special lei-making workshop led by our therapists and interns. What began as a hands-on activity quickly grew into something deeper.
As lei were woven, participants shared stories of loved ones, cultural traditions, and the meaning behind them. The space also opened up important conversations about the need for more community gathering places and the real impact of violence in our neighborhoods.

Moments like these remind us that healing often begins with connection across generations.

Mahalo to everyone who joined us and made this day so meaningful. We look forward to continuing to create spaces where our community can come together, share, and heal.

Kupuna to Kamali’i is a program from The Counseling Center on O’ahu’s Waianae Coast, offering counseling and activities to address trauma and mental health using a local, culturally-based approach.

In 2025, Catholic Charities Hawai‘i served over 74,000 families and individuals across the state.
