At this year’s Heroes and Helpers event—co-hosted by Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, the Kaneohe Target at Windward Mall, and local first responders—two stories shined especially bright.
Heroes and Helpers is an annual celebration that brings holiday joy to keiki while strengthening positive relationships between youth and law enforcement.
Each child receives a gift card to shop for Christmas presents and is paired with a local first responder to help them pick out gifts for themselves and their families.
Officer Ilse Pratt was paired with Kayla, an 11-year-old who instantly connected with her. Instead of toys, Kayla carefully selected essentials: pajamas, a blanket, clothing, and a volleyball she wanted to use to practice and improve her skills. Kayla shared that she is one of seven siblings, recently moved to Waimānalo, and feels happier and more settled since the move. She even planned to pass her gently used clothing to her younger sister.
During their shopping trip, Officer Pratt learned that Kayla currently shares a bed with her mom and dreams of having one of her own. She guided Kayla to pick out an air mattress—something Kayla never expected she’d be able to get. When they reached the register and the total exceeded her $100 gift card, Officer Pratt quietly paid the remaining amount herself. When Kayla realized what had happened, she covered her eyes—overwhelmed with tears of happiness and gratitude.
Meanwhile, Kianna was paired with Officer Virgara. She shopped thoughtfully for her family and friends: a cinnamon roll stuffed animal for her mom, a Stitch toy for her best friend, gifts for her sister, a penguin for her dad, and a gift for her uncle’s girlfriend. The only item Kianna chose for herself was an angel—a fitting gift for such a special little girl.
These moments highlight the spirit of giving and compassion that makes Heroes and Helpers so meaningful. Simple acts of kindness—like Officer Pratt and Officer Virgara’s generosity—can bring comfort, joy, and hope to keiki and their families.
Not all heroes wear capes. Some show their heroism through compassion, generosity, and hearts full of aloha.
