In an effort to help our kupuna prepare for the upcoming storm, Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, Lanakila Pacific and the Honolulu City & County’s Department of Community Services delivered free, pre-cooked meals to several senior affordable rental housing buildings.
Approximately 20 seniors residing at the Artesian Vista apartment building in McCully and another 16 seniors at the Kalakaua Vista apartments received the free meals. Staff from Catholic Charities Hawai‘i and the City Department of Community Services’ Elderly Affairs Division and WorkHawai’i Division delivered the ready-to-serve meals and side dishes prepared by Lanakila Pacific’s Meals on Wheels program.
The food was delivered to the seniors in response to the expected arrival of Hurricane Lowell and because elevator service was recently impacted at some multi-floor apartment buildings following Tropical Storm Lala. Catholic Charities Hawai’i staff, which provides social services to the building residents, went door-to-door to get the seniors’ dietary and other needs and coordinated with the city’s Elderly Affairs Division and Lanakila Pacific on the food deliveries.
“We want to ensure that our kupuna remain safe and nourished with the anticipated stormy weather,” said Catholic Charities Hawai‘i president and CEO Tina Andrade. “We are grateful to the Honolulu City & County’s Elderly Affairs Division and Lanakila Pacific Meals on Wheels program for their help in caring for our seniors during these situations.”
