On February 7, 2024, hearts swelled with love and creativity as Catholic Charities Hawai‘i’s ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) Akahai E Komo Mai Program hosted a Valentine’s card-making event at Hale Wai Vista. The gathering brought together keiki and kupuna to celebrate the season of love by crafting heartfelt cards for family, friends, and even themselves.
A Day of Creativity and Connection
The community center buzzed with excitement as tables filled with colorful paper, glitter, stickers, and markers. Children and seniors sat side by side, sharing stories, laughter, and creativity.
For the keiki, the activity was a joyful outlet for imagination. Cards blossomed with vibrant hearts, anime characters, and thoughtful messages—each a unique reflection of love.
Kupuna, with wisdom and gentle encouragement, guided the young ones and added their own heartfelt touches. Their cards carried a timeless charm, reminding everyone of the beauty of lived experience and shared traditions.
Messages of Love — and Self-Love
One of the most touching themes of the day was self-love. Participants were encouraged to write affirmations and kind words to themselves, reminding each other of the importance of cherishing the person in the mirror.
From “I love you, Mom” to cards adorned with colorful hearts, every piece told a story of connection, care, and joy.
Building Community Through Small Acts
As the afternoon wrapped up, tables were filled with cards—some simple, some elaborate, all filled with love. The event not only celebrated Valentine’s Day but also reminded everyone that love knows no age.
The day left participants with fuller hearts, lifted spirits, and stronger connections across generations.
Though it took place earlier this year, the event continues to inspire—showing how Catholic Charities Hawai‘i programs foster creativity, compassion, and community, one small act of love at a time.
