Catholic Charities Hawai‘i recently supported a chronically homeless family through a powerful journey of healing and hope. The mother, currently pregnant, has two young children and had been separated from her partner for two years while he entered a recovery program. During that time, she and the children stayed in a shelter as they tried to rebuild their lives.
For nearly two years, she carried more than most ever should. Each day required strength, patience, and resilience. Nights were uncertain, and the future often felt out of reach. Yet through it all, she held on to hope.
Her children were her reason to keep going. Even in the shelter, she did everything she could to create a sense of comfort and normalcy for them.
When the father completed his recovery program, everything began to shift.
There was joy, but also uncertainty. Rebuilding a life together after so much time apart is not easy. Trust needed to be rebuilt. Stability was still out of reach. And the biggest question remained. Where would they call home?
That is when Catholic Charities Hawai‘i stepped in.
Through the Statewide Homeless Emergency Grants program, our team walked alongside the Flores family during one of the most critical moments in their journey. The first step was reunification, bringing the family back together with care, compassion, and understanding.
The next step was finding a home.
In Hawai‘i’s challenging housing market, that can feel impossible, especially for families starting over. But through persistence, advocacy, and partnership, our staff worked closely with a landlord to secure safe and stable housing for the Flores family.
The moment they received their keys was more than just a move in day.
It was a turning point.
For the first time in years, the family could close a door and know they were safe. The children had a place to sleep, to play, and to simply be kids. The mother could prepare to welcome her new baby into a home filled with love instead of uncertainty. And the father, now working full time, could provide for his family and begin to rebuild what had been lost.
Through this program, the family received critical short term support, including help with rent, move in costs, and housing stabilization services. Just as important was the continued guidance, encouragement, and connection to resources that help turn a temporary solution into long term success.
Today, the Flores family is not just housed, they are healing.
They are learning to move forward together, one step at a time. There are still challenges ahead, but now those challenges are met with stability, support, and hope.
Their story is a powerful reminder that behind every statistic is a family, a struggle, and a chance for a new beginning.
In 2025 alone, Catholic Charities Hawai‘i helped 10,373 families and individuals across the islands through housing and homelessness assistance programs. The Flores family is just one of thousands whose lives have been transformed because compassionate supporters made it possible to turn hardship into hope and a house into a home.
Because sometimes all it takes is one opportunity, one act of compassion, and one place to call home to change everything.
