Finding Light Through Art: Robert’s Journey

Robert is a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, a father, and an artist. He was known for his stunning paintings of Hawaiian warriors, whales, and expansive wall murals. Art was more than just a career for Robert—it was his identity, his joy, and his purpose.

But when Robert first came to Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi, he was in crisis.

He had lost the ability to create art. Once confident in his craft, he now couldn’t remember how to hold a brush or draw a line. His world became even more disorienting when he began walking into walls and doors, struggling with depth perception and daily tasks. Without art—and with his independence slipping away—Robert’s mental health declined. He felt lost, disconnected, and unsure where to turn.

That’s when Robert reached out to Catholic Charities Hawai‘i’s Service Members, Veterans, and Their Families (SMVF) program. He was connected to a compassionate Case Manager through the SSG Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program, part of SMVF’s coordinated care for Veterans experiencing mental health crises.

Robert owes his life to his good friend and his friendʻs wife, who were there when he passed out one day. They rushed him to the nearest Emergency Room where doctors discovered the answer: a tumor the size of a golf ball was pressing on the back of his brain. Surgery was scheduled immediately.

The biggest question—one that weighed heavily on Robert—was whether he would ever be able to create art again. The answer came soon after the operation: yes.

Miraculously, Robert’s passion and skill returned. He picked up his brushes again, remembering the movements that once felt lost to him. “He’s like a totally new person,” said his Case Manager. “He’s so happy and motivated!”

Today, Robert isn’t just creating art again—he’s also rebuilding relationships. He’s reconnecting with his adult son and being a present, loving father to his 10-year-old daughter, who shares his artistic talent. He’s also paying it forward, mentoring fellow Veterans and sharing his story of healing through the SSG Fox Suicide Prevention Grant program’s community of support.

Robert continues to inspire all who know him. His courage, creativity, and compassion remind us that healing is possible—even in the face of great odds.
