On October 9, thirty youth from Catholic Charities Hawai‘i’s Koastal Kids program embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Kualoa Ranch—a day filled with discovery, learning, and joy.
Originally planned for July, the trip had been postponed due to the tsunami, which meant missing out on the full ocean experience. But this time, the skies were clear, the ocean was calm, and excitement filled the air.
The day began at the Hakipuʻu Education Center, where the youth had the chance to interact with animals and learn about the deep cultural roots that connect people to the land. A freshly prepared bento lunch from Kualoa’s kitchen was an ‘ono highlight—simple, delicious, and shared with laughter among friends.
Next came the Ocean Voyage Experience—the heart of the day’s adventure. The group explored the historic fishpond and learned about Kualoa’s fishing traditions, along with its place in Hawai‘i’s history and pop culture. As the boat cruised across the water, breathtaking views of the mountains framed the horizon. The salty breeze carried memories of the familiar West Side beaches, and the warm sun reminded everyone just how special home truly is.
For many of the youth, it was their first time on a boat—and the pure joy on their faces said it all. Each outing like this helps them see new possibilities: future jobs, places to live, and ways to give back to their island home.
This experience is part of Catholic Charities Hawai‘i’s ongoing mission to help families, children, and individuals thrive. In 2024 alone, Catholic Charities Hawai‘i provided assistance and support to more than 12,000 families statewide, offering programs that strengthen communities and open doors to new opportunities—just like this special day at Kualoa Ranch.
Mahalo to Kualoa Ranch, Robert Pascua, Frank Among, and all the wonderful staff members who made this day possible. It was an experience that will live in their hearts forever.
